Anyway, we hope @orklanorge will help us remove the bottles from Idun Industries (owned by Orkla) from the Norwegian beaches. All good beach parties need ketchup, but not like this! We are offering @orklanorge to run a new Idun cleanup boat from 2020-2025, if they fund the boat. We look forward to a lot of happy moments around the bonfire, with sausages and Idun Ketchup, having breaks in the cleanup work with volunteers at the most beautiful coastline in the world:-) #idun #

We hope Idun Industries and Orkla will help us in the battle against marine litter. We have spoken to some of the firestarters, and the story we get, is that it’s too difficult and expensive to get rid of the trash in a propper way. We are now offering a solution to this, combining logistics for personal waste and beach litter. Hopefully people will grasp the opportunity...

He has been trying to get a simple answer from Orkla, about who they think should pay the costs of cleaning up the bottles. Hopefully Orkla is planning a good answer on our simple question: Who should cover the costs of removing their bottles from the ocean? Is it Rolf-Ørjan and his volunteer beach cleaners? Is it the tax payers? The gouvernement? Or, maybe the big industries that make fortunes on selling plastic products should help? We are looking forwa

Despite the fact that we couldn’t start full scale beach cleaning due to the weather, we didn’t waste our time in the harbor. We took that opportunity to prepare ourselves, in order to be as operational as possible. First we worked a lot on safety. We learnt how to use a radio. How, when and who to call for help. We practiced the life jacket checks and how to put it on... We had a mock rescue mission, we had to “rescue” Trond who “fell overboard” three times, we’re thinking about teaching him about balance now. We also have pr

  138. - FACING THE TRASH We have now started to face the Norwegian plastic…. “for real”. The first words that come to our minds, to describe this experience are shock, frustration - and motivation! First, we were shocked. Of course, we had seen the videos, we had been told how much plastic was here and how much it needed cleaning. We didn’t come here to clean up spotless beaches. But on the videos, you think only the worst parts are shown, you don’t imagine that the density of plastic waste is actually that high on the whole place. You don’t hear the plastic bottles crushing under your feet, hidden by the herbs. You don’t realize ho

WEEK #2 / 2020 REPORT During this week, we got in to the reality of this work, we had to fight against the weather, and eventually got used to the life on a boat. First we faced the reality of the plastic pollution for the first time. We also experienced full days, half days, rest days, and different combinations of them, so we started to understand better what each of these represent, in terms of tiredness and recovery. We got used to day-to-day routines, like mooring techniques, pick-up strategies, loading/unloading Nemo. Our technique has improved during the week, and we became more and more efficient. The weather wasn’t with us.
  142. - CREW-MEMBER PRESENTATION.. 'm Julia, a 19 year old passionate snowboarder from Germany. First and foremost, I joined ITSB to do important and valuable work for the nature and to preserve it for future generations. It all started a few years ago when I became a vegetarian. In this process I also engaged in issues like sustainability and environmental protection. I began eating vegan meals as often as possible. Since then I have also tried to buy mostly plastic-free and generally only things I really need. When I visited Norway last summer, I expected to see a clean country - so I was really surprised and shocked about all the trash I

Every full workday, we came back with a ton of plastic! That's because we have two new volunteers, so we can pick up more than on Lånan. The islands of the municipality of Rødøy are a bit harder to work on than the ones in Lånan. Maybe we get less dirty, because there is a lot more grass, instead of big mud fields, but the trash is more spread out. In Lånan, we didn’t have to walk a lot to go from one trash hotspot to the others. The locals help us by giving us tips, and also manpo

  1. - Why do we care for the ocean?. 🌊 The ocean is home to 249,000 known species, with millions more still undiscovered. This incredible biodiversity is Earth’s richest: a living network that supports climate balance, produces much of the oxygen we breathe, and sustains life far beyond the shoreline. But it’s also fragile. Pollution, climate change, and overuse are pushing this system to its limits. That’s why at ITSB we care. We believe that understanding leads to protection. Through our work, we aim to raise awareness and inspire people to take action. What’s your favorite animal that lives in the ocean? ⬇️ #ocean #inthesameboat #speci

  5. - WE 👏 ARE 👏 SO 👏 MANY and it really does add up!. ! What really made me understand that, was hearing some numbers of our cleanup mission from our captain: One of our beach cleaners cleans around 30 kg / hour. One team of beach cleaners cleans 2000 kg / day. And since 2017 we have cleaned 1 800 000 kgs 🤯. And there are of course so many other people, other crews, all over the world - cleaning up! And this isn’t beachcleaning-specific of course. EVERYTHING ADDS UP! And I truly believe that change will have to come from the bottom up. Neither industries nor governments are going to change anything - unless we demand it! #plasticpollution

  9. - IT’S CALLED SPEAKING FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE LADS!!. !! Yes, it’s bad in a lot of countries (if not most). Norway just really shocked me - because before coming here, I also believed the image - that Norway is this perfect, green, progressive country. And then on some beaches in Northern Norway you find 1 ton of marine litter every 100 metres. So yes, it’s bad everywhere - because the ocean doesn’t care about borders and “untouched” nature unfortunately just doesn’t really exist anymore. But if we are all connected by the same ocean… then the solution is also exactly that! Because we’re going to need all of us - wherever we are - to pr

Okay, so it looks like we’re not going to reach the 1.5 degree target and a bunch of other goals either. Yes, governments and companies should have acted decades ago. 56. - Whoever said beach cleaning is easy has not come picking with us 💪🏼…. 💪🏼 Finnmark is the most northern part of mainland Norway and the most challenging terrain that we operate in. The weather, remoteness, and rugged coastline means that we often have to get creative on how to pick the toxic waste and remove it. Our team Fonn has been busy in Havøysund removing trash that we couldn’t get out last year due to weather and picking new pollution that has washed up during the season. 57. - Why go beach cleaning until I find a shoe?. ! Sometimes you need some little “goals” to lighten everything up a bit, when surrounded by devastating pollution all the time. (Anyone else’s brain work the same way? In constant need of little goals and milestones?) Anyway, shoes are just fun to find - I mean, how did they end up on a beach?? Over the past six years that I have been beach cleaning in the Arctic, most shoes I found were male working shoes - presumably from workers from the fishery or oil industry. Sometimes an odd flip flop here and there. Which still begs the question why any foot wear is on a beach at all - but oh

  60. - Our travel continues north: from Selsøyvik to Grønnøy - the so…. 🌳 Surrounded by snow-covered mountains, crystal clear water, and long Arctic evenings, we spent our days beach cleaning along the rugged coastline of Meløy as part of the Rydd i Tide programme ⛰️ From the very first second, we were welcomed by the locals. Curious visitors stepped aboard our boat for chats, fishermen shared life stories with us on the dock, and locals even helped us gather the trash depots we collected along the road. We were warmly welcomed in the local shop “Grønnøy Handleri” and our beach cleaners got to taste “Krinalefse”, the Nor
  61. - I just spent the past 2.5 months in Norway (with short intervals in…. ), working on a documentary film project on plastic pollution, and while it’s been very inspiring, intense and important - it’s also been very lonely at times. Since I was 19 I have been on the constant move - last year I only spent 2 months or so in Portugal (my “home base”) - and while I love love love travelling and all the excitement and adventure and uncertainty and endless possibilities; the “older” I get, the more I also crave stability and a place to unpack the suitcase. Where I can find all the light switches in the dark.

  64. - As someone who has been involved with beachcleaning and the fight…. (which is ofc just a symptom of ALL the environmental and humanitarian crises we are facing) for years now, it can sometimes feel extremely overwhelming. Seeing another animal trapped in a net, hearing plastic crunch beneath your feet where there should be nothing but grass and wildflowers. Then you turn on the news, and more collapse and horror is happening. But listen, the fact that we feel something is GOOD! Thank god we haven’t lost our humanity and empathy. Thank god we haven’t become numb. That feeling is evidence that we care. And care is

A recap of what our teams accomplished in May 2026 🌊 From the shores of Southern Norway, to Orkney, Scotland, to the Northern most part of mainland Norway, our teams were busy cleaning 💪🏼 But beyond the cleaning, our teams connected with the local communities, had epic sails along the coast, and saw breathtaking wildlife. Here’s to a great May 💙 Our beach cleaning activities in Norway are part of @rydd_i_tide and @handelensmiljofond. That’s why we’re excited to introduce Dana, one of our special volunteers aboard Qilak ⛵️ Over the next few weeks, Dana will be joining us to clean trash from Arctic coastlines while bringing a unique scientific perspective to the mission. She was the first researcher to study microplastics in Kazakhstan and now works in Germany, raising awareness about microplastic pollution and advocating for stronger regulations. Dana is also the co-founder of @microplasticfree_app, helpin
  68. - Sometimes a little bit of delusion is a useful thing, no?. 19 year old surfer who just wanted to make a bit of a change - and approached it purely rationally, I probably would have concluded that my efforts wouldn’t make much of a difference. That the problem is simply too big. That every minute 1 garbage truck of plastic enters the ocean. And that all the plastic litter is just a tiny symptom of a much larger systemic crisis anyway. And yet, sometimes you gotta ignore the big overwhelming stuff and just focus on the little patch of land (or sand) in front
  69. - When we say beach cleaning, we don’t mean walking in sandy flat beaches.. ’t mean it doesn’t exist or that they don’t need to be protected. 70. - Last week our Live Team had a Plastic Free Seafood Mission 🌊🐟…. 🌊🐟 Magnus, a local fishermen contacted the team to ask for help disposing of some gill nets. We ended up retrieving 800 kgs of gill nets. If the gill nets would have ended up in the ocean it may have taken years to retrieve them and they would’ve endangered wildlife and ecosystems. It’s essential to provide proper waste management in coastal communities that are remote and not have proper access to dispose of their waste. We are happy to have been able to help Magnus and welcome him as our newest member of the our Plastic Free Seafood Campaign! Learn more about our campaign
  71. - I’m just feeling incredibly grateful for everyone in this industry…. (or wine), shared advice, made an introduction, pushed me to think big and outside of the box and believed in me. Soooo many inspiring people out there that I’ve been getting to learn from and work with - can’t wait to see what the next year brings! ♥️ And of course it is a really tricky industry to break into (is anything worthwhile ever easy?), but it still feels so right pursuing it - going for what haunts and excites me. 72. - It is World Ocean Day today!!. !! 🌊♥️ And I am so happy that I get to spend my days working towards something that feels deeply meaningful - trying to live a life full of purpose, creativity and joy, chipping away at bits of a much bigger picture together with some incredibly inspiring people. As a surfer, the ocean has always felt like home. And somewhere along the way, filmmaking became another way of being in relationship with it - a way of paying attention, asking questions and maybe helping others fall in love with it too. And somehow, the Venn diagram of ocean (and nature) protection, storytelling and community building just ended
  73. - June 8th is World Ocean Day.. ’s also Monday. We may not have been around for 100 years (yet), but for the past nearly 10 years we’ve been living at sea fighting against plastic pollution and for the protection of our oceans. We agree with Sir David Attenborough that the most important place is at sea. While today is a moment to celebrate and appreciate the ocean, protecting it requires more than a single day of awareness. It takes consistent action, collaboration, and people willing to get their hands dirty. Every bag of waste removed, every volunteer engaged, and every conversation started brings us one step closer to hea

We were lucky to have plenty of local support along the way: high school students joined us with their kayaks, a local came out for a cleaning day, and another local helped us collect depots. Between cleanups, we got to experience a bit of life in Inndyr. We celebrated Norway’s National Day with homemade cakes and the local 17th of May parade. We were inv

When you’re in the middle of it, it’s easy to sometimes get lost in the feeling that the pollution is never ending: There is always another island full of trash, another polluted beach, another pile of ropes and plastic. So every now and then it’s good to step back and be like: “Wow, this is actually sick - all of this plastic litter is out of nature now and won’t be suffocating any birds or whales any time soon!”, #plasticpollution #norway #ocean #nopl
  81. - When I first came to Norway, I had this image of a picture-perfect…. ’s also this other side of Norway, one that exists behind the country’s carefully curated green façade. There, tons and tons and tons of plastic pollution are suffocating beaches and wild life. Over the past six years that I have been helping to remove plastic litter of Norway’s coastline, I have seen countless animals dying. Sometimes we are there in time to cut them free. Most of the time we are too late. But that is also huge motivation for me to
  82. - Cleaning remote coastlines isn’t always glamorous.. ’s why having the right gear matters. For the past several years, @hellyhansen has been helping our crews stay warm, dry, and ready for whatever the Arctic throws at us. Over time, their gear has become the uniform for our teams- comfortable enough for long days in the field, durable enough to handle the rough conditions we work in, and reliable when the weather takes a turn. It doesn’t hurt that it also makes us look pretty cool too 💪🏼 Their support allows us focus

  90. - I mean, tbf, sometimes I am asking myself the same question - but…. ) I am here to beach clean and shoot for my documentary on plastic pollution - and this boat belongs to a Norwegian NGO that works with international volunteers, who clean 10% of the world’s coastline. How sick is that?! 😍 This boat load here was a day’s work - around 1200 kilos of plastic litter collected! So I guess this is my long-winded way of saying… don’t worry mum, I’m having a really good time:), #sailing #norway #remote #plasticpollution

It’s rocky coastline is covered with discarded nets, ropes, plastic bottles, and trawl balls- so many trawl balls. In just three weeks this season, our team removed over 1,000 trawl balls from a relatively small stretch of coastline outside Båtsfjord. And the number keeps growing by around 100 more every single day. We cleaned the same area in 2023 and now, just three years later the beaches are filled with just as much plastic. Since we started in 2017, we’ve worked closely with the s

But this was from a magical sail from Stamsund, Lofoten to Bodø in Northern Norway, moving location after we collected 2700 kilos of plastic litter in Lofoten. And these days in summer, the sun doesn’t set anymore (it just says “No sunset today” in your weather app lol) So I filmed this at around 1 am, we basically had no winds and the sea was this endless silky sheet. Our boat, wrapped in marmalade-light. And then, the whales!! (Of course I forgot what
  94. - Come sailing with our Live Team ⛵️✨ Yes we are beach cleaners, but…. ! We live and operate on sailboats, sailing along the Norwegian coastline and accessing really remote areas that are also heavily polluted. At In The Same Boat, we host and train volunteers from all over the world to be beach cleaners and sailors ⛵️💙 There is something incredibly special about living among the nature we are fighting to protect. We get to experience and learn from the powers of the ocean, wind, and land reminding us that we are all interconnected and part of the environment 🌏 If you are sailor, what’s your favorite part of sailing?
  95. - We are not just beach cleaners.. “In The Same Boat” means pulling stuck nets out of the ground, rowing against the wind, collecting plastic in the rain, and climbing over cliffs. It means sailing beneath the midnight sun, sharing cake on deck after a long day, exploring new landscapes, and growing together like a family. Being In The Same Boat is about so much more than cleaning coastlines, it’s about the people beside you and the memories and the impact you create together. 96. - 2026 is my 7th year being a beach cleaner - and living on sailboats…. ’s crazy stunning beaches from marine litter - and actually 70% of the Norwegian coastline! (And there are SHOCKING amounts of litter here, trust me!) I am also making documentary films about it all - because what happens on these tiny Arctic islands deserves to travel much further. And we can only solve a problem this big if we talk about it and tackle it together. As a surfer, the ocean has given me so much. I guess this is me trying to give something back! So please come aboard - we are going to n
  97. - Be the Bellingham to my Haaland and let’s take care of our planet…. 🫶 This is my 7th year of beach cleaning in Norway - as a surfer, I just hated seeing all this horrible plastic litter in the ocean and really wanted to do something about it! So now, together with volunteers from around the world, we remove marine litter from the second longest coastline in the world. And my favourite part (I mean, there are loads of favourite parts ofc 🤪), is just watching complete strangers come together and become a team. People from different countries, backgrounds and beliefs, all choosing to spend their time taking care of something we
  98. - Read what our volunteers from Team Live have to say about their stay…. 💙 “Everyone has their part to play to make the world a better place ♻️ It’s very easy to look at the state of the world and feel disheartened, hopeless and helpless. But nothing is going to change if you just sit at home, saying how awful it is. That’s why we joined In The Same Boat to begin with. Finding hundreds of kgs of plastic everyday can be bittersweet. It reminds you of the immense problem that can feel never ending, yet every single piece of plastic removed is one less in nature, and one step closer to a clean thriving ocean. Everyday comes with it

But recognising everything that is effed up with the world and loving it hard enough to keep fighting for it anyway… that! 102. - Life on a sailboat in the remote Arctic ey!. ! After spending the past six years beach cleaning and sailing along Norway’s coastline, I can confidently say that it is nothing like the pretty adverts (but then, also sometimes it is)! 🤪 And I´ll probably never grow into being a proper sailor - the bowline is still the only knot I can confidently tie. And life aboard sure does come with it’s own challenges (the AMOUNT of times that there have been issues to do with the black-water tank…) but I wouldn’t ever want to miss out on the experience of it! PROs vs CONs - which side wins? Could you ever image living off-grid in the Arctic on a sai
  103. - So I read these news a few days ago and was like: Whatttt is going on???. ! But see for yourself: So, American Samoa has been saying “no” to deep sea mining for over a year: Its government has opposed it. Local communities have opposed it. The territory has even banned deep-sea mining in its own waters. (As they should, scientists warn that deep sea mining could destroy habitats and cause biodiversity loss that could be irreversible on multi-generational timescales.) And yet, just a few days

Right now, governments are meeting in Jamaica to decide what happens next. But one Canadian tech company didn’t want to wait for the UN process: they decided to apply for US permits offered by the Trump administration last year. 107. - When I first came to Norway six years ago - just a surfer who wanted…. ’t expecting having to see countless animals dying. Sometimes we are there in time to cut them free - like with these two sheep here. But most of the time we are too late. So caring is a huge part of my motivation. Knowing, that if I pick up this net or oil can or rope when beach cleaning - it might save a life. Two sheep might not end up getting entangled in it. It just makes me so sad that wild life is the one to suffer most from the consequences of our careless lifestyle. So with every fiber in my being, I am
  108. - If this trash was polluting your backyard, would you leave it there?. 400 million tonnes of plastic waste, and only 9% is recycled. So where does the rest go? Much of it ends up in landfills, the ocean, or washed up along our coastlines. We’ve become so used to seeing litter in cities that we almost expect it. But when you find the same pollution on a remote, uninhabited island surrounded by wildlife, it becomes very clear that this does not belong here. Just because we don’t see it every day doesn’t mean it’s not our problem. For our crews at In The Same Boat, this is the reality that we face every s
  109. - We (literally) can not pour more oil into the fire.. 300.000 people in Europe have been evacuated from the fires. By the end of this month, an area larger than Luxembourg has burned. 2026 is the worst burns the EU and UK has seen in 20 years. But these wild fires are not “normal” wild fires anymore - the fossil-fuelled climate crisis is what that turns them into monster fires that burn hotter, longer and are harder to control. Scientists warned us that our house is burning. They were right. This is the cost of inaction. So how much longer are we going to let fossil fuel companies make record profits while people and

(unsurprisingly) all about freezing winds, soaked clothes, wet feet, hands so numb they can barely move - and I hateeeee* it so much!! … but I do love the ocean more. And that’s why I keep coming back to this little beachcleaning crew in the Arctic, that actually cleans 10% of the world’s coastline!! It’s my 6th year with them now.
