Cave Paintings of El Castillo

The earliest known cave art at El Castillo in northern Spain. Hand stencils and red-disk pigments dated by uranium-thorium to at least 40,800 years ago, old enough that the first painters may have been Neanderthals, not Homo sapiens. The cave wall is the first known persistent communication surface.
