The Han Dynasty court official Cai Lun standardises a process for making paper from mulberry bark, hemp, rags, and fishing nets. The technology spreads slowly westward, reaching Baghdad in 793, Spain in 1056, England in 1490, replacing parchment as the substrate that the printing press will need.
