Valla exposes the Donation of Constantine
1440
Lorenzo Valla demonstrated on linguistic grounds that the Donation of Constantine, the document by which the papacy claimed temporal authority over the Western empire, could not have been written in the 4th century, because its Latin was of a much later period. It is an early instance of philology used to break a forgery, several centuries before forensic science.
