Basler Fasnacht - Carnival of Basel

Recurring annual carnival, the largest in Switzerland, beginning with Morgestraich at 4:00am on the Monday after Ash Wednesday and running exactly 72 hours. Satire is central: cliques display satirical Sujets on illuminated lanterns and Schnitzelbank singers perform mocking verses on current events. The oldest document referring to carnival in Basel dates from 1376, when a tournament ended in a riot remembered as the 'böse Fasnacht'. Inscribed by UNESCO in 2017.
