Feast of Fools forbidden by the Council of Basel

The Feast of Fools was officially forbidden by the Council of Basel in 1431. Suppression was far from immediate: instances were still recorded in Brussels in 1719 and Amiens as late as 1721. The long survival of the custom despite repeated ecclesiastical bans is why its licensed-mischief character migrated into secular folk practice rather than dying out.
