Nasreddin Hodja is the trickster-sage of Turkish and wider Islamic folklore, whose anecdotes turn on inversion, absurd logic and mockery of authority. The oldest recorded Nasreddin story appears in Ebu'l-Khayr-i Rûmî's Saltuk-nâme of 1480, which states he was born in Sivrihisar. From the 16th century the figure served increasingly as a point of crystallisation for a floating tradition of jokes and anecdotes of varied origin.
