Zog refuses the Italian demands and cuts the budget

Zog rejected Rome's conditions, cut the state budget by 30 per cent, dismissed Italian military advisers and nationalised Catholic schools. The measures asserted Albanian independence at the cost of the country's main source of funds. The school nationalisation also strained relations with the Catholic north.
