The Communist Threat (1962)
1962
A dramatised anti-communist film about a family trying to escape East Germany, made for Western audiences at the height of the Cold War with professional actors and a scripted plot. The technique is melodrama used as argument: a political system is judged through one family's peril, and fiction is delivered in the register of reportage so viewers process it as testimony. Its overwrought style is exactly what makes it a teaching object.
