Inside the Atom

A sponsored educational film on atomic energy from the height of the American nuclear programme, explaining fission to a general audience in confident, friendly terms. The persuasion lies in the emphasis: the atom is presented as an industrial marvel and a national asset, with the weapons and the fallout kept at the edge of the frame. Films like this built public consent for the nuclear state as much as any civil defence drill.
