Boaty McBoatface the submarine does real science

The autonomous vehicle named Boaty McBoatface made its first Antarctic deployment in April 2017, diving to about 4,000m in the Orkney Passage and travelling roughly 180km along the seabed collecting temperature, salinity and turbulence data. Results published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2019 linked strengthening winds, driven by the Antarctic ozone hole, to deep-ocean turbulence and warming. The joke name ended up attached to a genuine climate finding.
