Proclaimed Zog I, King of the Albanians
SEP 01 1928
On 1 September 1928 the Albanian parliament declared the country a monarchy and proclaimed President Ahmet Zogu as Zog I. He took the style 'King of the Albanians' rather than King of Albania, a formulation that implicitly claimed the Albanians outside the state's borders. He swore his oath on both the Bible and the Quran. He is often said to have 'crowned himself'. There was no coronation with a crown; parliament proclaimed him and he swore an oath. The regnal name Zog was chosen over his given name Ahmet.
