Sharia replaced by a Swiss-modelled Civil Code

In 1929 Islamic law was abolished as a source of Albanian civil law and replaced by a code modelled on the Swiss civil code, following the Turkish example. The reform imposed a single secular civil law on a population that was majority Muslim with Orthodox and Catholic minorities. Agrarian reform intended to dismantle feudal land tenure was legislated in the same period.
