Yugoslavia's debut is immediately competitive, the first socialist-bloc nation at Eurovision outperforming several Western countries. Context Yugoslavia had been an EBU member since 1956 but delayed participation until Tito's federation felt ready. JRT selected Novaković after a qualifying round. The socialist federation used Eurovision as a soft-power signal of cultural openness against Soviet-bloc isolation. Legacy Yugoslavia remained a consistent Eurovision presence until dissolving in 1991. Riva's 1989 win, the federation's only victory, was still 27 years away.
