Chilean mills grinding gold ore

An engraving of the heavy stone mills used to crush ore in the California diggings, published in volume five of the French travel journal Le Tour du monde. The image is by Gustave-Adolphe Chassevent-Bacques and depicts the industrial phase of gold extraction that followed the early years of panning.
