Arnold Genthe's view of Chinatown on the morning of the earthquake

Genthe photographed the city on 18 April 1906, the day the earthquake struck and the fires began. He had spent years documenting Chinatown before the disaster, and the quarter he had recorded was destroyed within days of this negative being exposed.
