Chinatown on the morning of the earthquake
1906
Arnold Genthe photographed the city on 18 April 1906, the day the earthquake struck and the fires began. Having documented Chinatown for a decade, he recorded the quarter as it was being destroyed. The negative is in the Library of Congress.
