Men standing and walking along a Chinatown street
1896
An unposed street view from Arnold Genthe's long photographic survey of San Francisco's Chinatown, made at some point between 1896 and 1906. Genthe worked with a concealed camera to catch the neighbourhood's ordinary traffic rather than arranged portraits. Everything he recorded here was destroyed in the fire that followed the 1906 earthquake.
