A Chinese girl photographed in the streets of Chinatown
1896
One of Arnold Genthe's Chinatown negatives, made in the decade before the 1906 earthquake destroyed the quarter he was documenting. Genthe worked with a concealed camera on the street, and his surviving plates form the fullest visual record of pre-earthquake Chinatown. The negative is held by the Library of Congress.
