Arnold Genthe's colour view of Chinatown on the day of the quake

Genthe, who had spent a decade photographing San Francisco's Chinatown, made this transparency on 18 April 1906, the morning the earthquake struck. His pictures from that day are among the few colour-process records of the disaster and are held in the Library of Congress.
