Resident Advisor returns to the city that gave dance music the Loft and the Paradise Garage and asks what survived the Giuliani-era cabaret-law crackdown. It sets the Levan and Mancuso inheritance, rooms built by and for Black, Latino and gay New Yorkers who were not welcome elsewhere, against the loft parties and small clubs carrying it on. The garage lineage has almost no surviving visual record, which makes this film unusually valuable here.
