Black clubs on Pacific Avenue and the sound of the Coast

A tribute to the Black musicians and dancers of the Barbary Coast's Pacific Avenue clubs, among them Purcell's So Different Club at 520 Pacific, which was Black-owned and housed a band reportedly the first to use the word jazz in its name. The quarter's dance halls were crippled by the Police Commission's September 1913 resolution and taxi dancing was finally prohibited in 1921.
