Gig drivers protest as robotaxis stall in a blackout

Gig workers gathered in San Francisco on 9 January 2026 after driverless vehicles stalled on city streets during a power outage. The protest followed two years of friction over autonomous vehicles, from the Chinatown burning in February 2024 to Waymo's opening of freeway service across a single 260 square mile Bay Area zone in November 2025.
