Rows of refugee tents pitched at the Presidio after the earthquake

The army opened the Presidio's grounds to people burned out of the city, and camps of regulation tents were laid out in ordered streets to house them. Tens of thousands sheltered in such camps across San Francisco through 1906. The photograph is held by the National Archives.
