Eisenstein on editing and meaning

A lecture on Eisenstein's film theory, working from his essay on the cinematographic principle and the ideogram through to Battleship Potemkin. The ideogram analogy is the key idea: as two characters combine into a new concept, two shots combine into a meaning neither contains, so the viewer performs the argument themselves. That is the mechanism that made montage a political tool as well as an aesthetic one.
