Computational propaganda and fake news

A research briefing on how political actors use social platforms, automated accounts and paid amplification, prompted by the 2016 referendum and election campaigns. The finding it stresses is structural: the manipulation is often legal, cheap and invisible to the people it reaches, which makes it far harder to counter than a broadcast lie. Funded academic work rather than commentary.
