Boaty McBoatface wins the NERC ship poll

The Natural Environment Research Council opened the #NameOurShip public poll for its new £200m polar research vessel on 17 March 2016. Former BBC radio presenter James Hand suggested 'Boaty McBoatface', then publicly apologised as it went viral; the site crashed under traffic. When voting closed on 16 April 2016 the name led with 124,109 votes, 33 percent of the total, from 7,034 suggestions.
