Nippon TV's long-running variety show hosted by the owarai duo Downtown (Hitoshi Matsumoto and Masatoshi Hamada) first aired late on 3 October 1989. It later added Hōsei Tsukitei and the duo Cocorico as co-hosts and reached its 1,000th episode on 18 April 2010. It became the single most influential vehicle for the 罰ゲーム (batsu game) penalty format in Japanese television.
