FDA warns on 'Sleepy Chicken' NyQuil cooking trend
SEP 15 2022
On 15 September 2022 the US Food and Drug Administration issued a consumer update warning against cooking chicken marinated in the cold medicine NyQuil, warning that boiling alters the concentration of its active drugs and that inhaling the vapours alone could deliver high drug levels. The warning itself dramatically amplified the trend: TikTok recorded fewer than five searches a day for the term before the statement and around 7,000 by 21 September, a documented case of a safety warning driving the behaviour it targeted.
