TikTok and Musical.ly merge into one global app

ByteDance, which acquired Musical.ly for roughly $1 billion in 2017, merged it into TikTok on 2 August 2018, migrating Musical.ly's largely Western teenage user base onto a single global platform. The merged app kept an algorithmic 'For You' feed. This consolidation created the distribution engine behind the challenge and prank formats that followed.
