Liberland

On 13 April 2015 a Czech politician named Vít Jedlička planted a flag on seven square kilometres of Danube floodplain that Croatia and Serbia had spent decades not claiming, and declared it a country. Gornja Siga is forest and mud, left over from the river changing course and a border commission never finishing its work. No UN member state recognises the Free Republic of Liberland; Croatia polices the land as its own and has arrested people trying to reach it, and in September 2023 sent police, forestry staff and a demolition crew to cut down the wooden buildings that settlers had put up weeks earlier. What exists instead is a diaspora: a constitution, a blockchain, passports, an argument about what a state actually is, and, every August since 2019, on barges and at a village on the Serbian bank, a festival called Floating Man.

A chronological documentary of 106 moments spanning 2000–2026 on Loreline.

  1. - Apatin harbour on the Danube. The harbour at Apatin on the Danube, photographed in 2000, well before Liberland's 2015 declaration. Included as geography, not as evidence of the claim.
  2. - Sealand, an earlier sea-fort micronation. The Principality of Sealand, a former WWII anti-aircraft platform off England claimed as a micronation since 1967, the best-known precedent Liberland supporters cite when arguing unclaimed or abandoned territory can be self-declared.
  3. - Satellite image of Gornja Siga. A tighter crop of the same 2007 ISS pass, centered on Gornja Siga, the specific riverine pocket between Croatia and Serbia that Liberland claims. Croatia treats the land as its own; Serbia has not asserted a claim to it either.
  4. - ISS view of the Liberland site. A NASA astronaut photograph from the International Space Station showing the Croatia-Serbia Danube stretch where the disputed pocket of land later claimed as Liberland sits, taken 8 years before the claim was made. Included for the land itself, not as evidence of Liberland.
  5. - The Danube at Apatin. The Danube seen from the Serbian town of Apatin, a few kilometres from the Gornja Siga pocket Liberland claims. Apatin is the nearest inhabited town and the usual staging point for visits to the site.
  6. - Danube riverbank near Apatin. Another view of the Danube at Apatin, the stretch of river whose meanders and cut-off pockets on the Croatian bank are the terrain Liberland's claim sits on.
  7. - Gornje Podunavlje nature reserve. The Gornje Podunavlje Special Nature Reserve near Apatin, the floodplain forest and wetland habitat that characterises this stretch of the Danube, including the Gornja Siga pocket.
  8. - The Danube border at Erdut. The Danube photographed from a border bridge between Croatia and Serbia near Erdut, with Erdut Castle visible on the Croatian bank. This is the same disputed river reach as Gornja Siga, roughly 60 km downstream from the site Liberland claims, photographed a year before the declaration.
  9. - Vit Jedlicka, a year before Liberland. Vit Jedlicka photographed in Hradec Kralove in 2014, before Liberland existed. He was a member of the Czech Party of Free Citizens at the time.
  10. - Media coverage: "Between Croatia and Serbia, the 'state' of Liberland proclaimed". Regional news report on the 13 April 2015 flag-raising ceremony at Gornja Siga in which Vít Jedlička proclaimed the "Free Republic of Liberland." Independent regional coverage of the founding event itself.
  11. - "Micronation of Liberland is world's newest fake country on Serb-Croat border". Early news-style report on the founding, days after the 13 April 2015 declaration. Headline framing ("fake country") signals a skeptical editorial stance from the outset.

  19. - "Croatia police arrest Liberland citizen illegally". Independently-uploaded footage of a Croatian police detention of someone attempting to access Liberland territory in the founding year. Title's "illegally" framing reflects the uploader's own view, not a court finding; Croatia's position was that access outside official crossings was unlawful, disputed by the Liberland side.
  20. - Liberland from the air. Aerial footage of the Gornja Siga floodplain and the Danube from summer 2015, the territory's first year. Shows the forested, unstable river-island terrain Liberland claims.
  21. - Freetown Christiania, Copenhagen. Freetown Christiania, a self-governing commune in Copenhagen since 1971, cited alongside Sealand as an earlier attempt at self-declared autonomy within an existing state's territory, context for how Liberland frames its own claim.
