Liberland

On 13 April 2015 a Czech politician named Vít Jedlička planted a flag on seven square kilometres of Danube floodplain that Croatia and Serbia had spent decades not claiming, and declared it a country. Gornja Siga is forest and mud, left over from the river changing course and a border commission never finishing its work. No UN member state recognises the Free Republic of Liberland; Croatia polices the land as its own and has arrested people trying to reach it, and in September 2023 sent police, forestry staff and a demolition crew to cut down the wooden buildings that settlers had put up weeks earlier. What exists instead is a diaspora: a constitution, a blockchain, passports, an argument about what a state actually is, and, every August since 2019, on barges and at a village on the Serbian bank, a festival called Floating Man.

Founding, Vít Jedlička declared the Free Republic of Liberland on 13 April 2015, on the argument that seven square kilometres of Danube floodplain called Gornja Siga were terra nullius, claimed by neither Croatia nor Serbia because of an unresolved border. Croatia rejects that reading and treats the land as its own or as a matter for the border commission; Serbia has called the statehood claim frivolous while saying the site is not Serbian. No UN member state has recognised it.
Gornja Siga, The place itself: a wooded pocket on the west bank of the Danube, formed by the river shifting course, reachable in practice by boat from the Serbian side because Croatia polices the land approach. Most of what Liberland has physically built sits at the Ark Village across the water in Serbia rather than on the claimed territory, where structures have repeatedly been put up and taken down again.
Floating Man, The festival, held every August since 2019 and named for the barges and for Burning Man. The first edition drew about a hundred people; 2020 moved online when travel closed; the 2021 edition went undocumented outside a single visitor's footage; and by 2023 there was a blockchain conference running inside it. It takes place mainly at the Ark Village near Apatin on the Serbian bank, which is the closest thing Liberland has to a functioning town.
Croatian Police, What has actually happened on the ground. Croatian police arrested Jedlička within weeks of the declaration and have detained people attempting to cross ever since. In September 2023 police, the state forestry service and a demolition crew cleared the settlement and felled the buildings, the forestry service called it a cleanup operation, Liberland called it an invasion, and sources disagree on whether it happened on the 7th or the 21st. A YouTuber reached the territory by jet ski that July and was briefly stopped, then let go.
Passports and Blockchain, The apparatus: a constitution, e-residency, a merit token, elections run on a blockchain, stamps and coins. Liberland says it has received hundreds of thousands of citizenship applications, the figures it gives are inconsistent, and the number of people actually living on the territory is zero. In 2025 and 2026 the system turned on itself, when the congress removed its own technology secretary and accused him of stripping the protections from the account that controls the chain.
Recognition, What other people make of it. Documentary crews, sceptical reporters and legal scholars have all had a go, and the readings run from a serious experiment in stateless governance to a crypto vehicle with a flag. This facet also holds the wider genre it belongs to, Sealand, Christiania, the long history of people declaring countries, and the arguments about whether recognition is something you are granted or something you take.
