During the First World War Zogu raised men from Mat and fought alongside Austro-Hungarian forces in Albania. The alignment was pragmatic: Austria-Hungary opposed the Serbian and Italian claims that most threatened Albanian territory. He commanded irregulars rather than holding a regular commission.
