Brain Rot
Oxford made "brain rot" its word of the year in December 2024, reviving a phrase Thoreau used in Walden in 1854. What followed was an argument that is still running: whether this is AI slop degrading children's media, or a genuine folk culture that happens to be made with new tools. The research cuts both ways, and one Indonesian academic has pointed out that brain rot is not a clinical diagnosis at all.
