Turn On, Tune In

Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert ran the Harvard Psilocybin Project until Harvard fired them both in 1963, the last time Harvard dismissed a faculty member for cause. What followed was not research but ministry: Millbrook, the League for Spiritual Discovery, a manual adapted from the Tibetan Book of the Dead, and a three-word slogan that did more to guarantee prohibition than any single piece of evidence against the drug.
