Island Detour
The route from Chicago to Britain ran through Ibiza. At Amnesia, DJ Alfredo played house next to Spanish pop, indie guitars and whatever else fit the night, no genre discipline at all, and in 1987 a handful of London DJs went out, heard it, and came home to build clubs around what they had felt. Balearic was never a sound so much as a permission: that records with nothing in common could belong to the same night. The island then spent thirty years industrialising it.

- - Wish You Were Here? visits Ibiza (Thames TV, 1979). A British holiday programme finds Ibiza a quiet, picturesque island, filmed a year before Ku's parties and eight years before the trip that exported the Balearic sound. It is Ibiza as ordinary package tourism, which is exactly what makes it worth keeping. The Thames archive gives the transmission date precisely.

Taped off air by a listener in the summer of 1997, it is a contemporary telling rather than a later retrospective. Holloway's own stake in the origin story is worth hearing alongside the standard version.
