Volunteers From Everywhere

The organisation was founded by Rolf-Ørjan Høgset in 2017 and runs on people who show up: a snowboarder from Germany, a gap-year student from London, someone who brought a cowboy hat from Arizona to clean Norwegian beaches. Skippers, coordinators, ambassadors, and the volunteers profiled one at a time as #ITSBHeroes. "There is an inspiring person behind every piece of trash that we pick up."

  1. - The skipper is away for a day, and the crew takes ahike at «De syv…. (the seven sisters), mountains, at Sandnessjøen.
  2. - The ketchup and mustard from Idun is popular to bring for outdoor…. ’t think anyone throw them in the ocean on purpose, but small accidents make them go away in the wild. It would have been great if Idun could help us bringing them back where they belong! What about an Idun workboat, that could bring our volunteer beachcleaners out, and the garbage in? Behind this bottles, you can see a mountain of garbage, and some real mountains with a great story. Can U guess the name of the mountains? #holdnorgerent #strandrydding #marinelitter #beachcleanups #pollution #norway #helgeland #helgelandskysten #sailing @miljodirektoratet

  4. - TRAVELLING KETCHUP PART 1 One of the founders of In The Same Boat,…. #helgelandskysten. He has been trying to get a simple answer from Orkla, about who they think should pay the costs of cleaning up the bottles. Now he will bring the bottles to their main office, to try to get an answer. We think cleaning up should be a natural part of any value chain that contains plastics. #holdnorgerent #handelensmiljøfond #norway #helgeland #ketchup #sailing
  5. - ITSBHeroes No.. 3 Leaving a good position at @porsche for his passion for the Ocean and a need for doing something with a greater purpose, Matt came to Norway to help us clean beaches at #Helgelandskysten… and he is still here. With valuable experience from “the other side”, he is now a part of our management team, developing #ITSB internationally. We are greatful for the opportunity to be here, and to be able to make a difference. The reward for the hard work is to experience the most beautiful coastline in the world.

  11. - Nothing is more satisfying than seeing the result of a hard day’s…. 🙌 Today some locals joined our long term volunteers and we had some extra hands to clean this small bay at Åsvær, Nordland. Luckily it gets harder and harder to find hotspots like this, as most of the Norwegian coastline is cleaned by a great volunteer effort the past 4-5 years. Still, we expect that we have to keep cleaning beaches for many years to come, as long as plastic continues to end up in our oceans, and because plastic pollution from decades is floating around, just waiting to get stuck on a beach nearby. Thanks to @strandryddere for tipping us about th

  74. - It makes us wonder how easily attention drifts to AI-generated…. €10 helps us clean around 20 metres of coastline in some of the most remote and vulnerable areas on Earth. Together with hundreds of volunteers living and working aboard our sailboats, we clean roughly 10% of the world’s coastline, piece by piece, shore by shore. This is what impact looks like when small actions add up. If you’ve ever wondered whether your support can make a real difference, this is it! With thanks: This post was inspired by @alexey.sibirsky. We loved how clearl

But the motivation of our new crew members is unstoppable 🔥 Make sure to follow and see our 2026 season ✨ #inthesameboat #beachcleaning #plasticpollution #volunteer norway
  79. - Happy International Women’s Day to all the women who have been part…. 💜 Today we want to take a moment to celebrate the inspiring, resilient, and dedicated women who have sailed, worked, researched, and volunteered with us throughout the year. Many of the people who make our missions possible are women. They are sailors, scientists, educators, and change makers who bring passion, knowledge, and determination to everything they do. The reality is that the sailing world and many scientific fields, are still largely male-dominated. Too often, the women in our teams still face outdated assumptions about what they can or canno

I am wondering why that is? Do men just care less about our environment? #plasticpollution #norway #ocean #surfergirl #sailing

  95. - June 8th is World Ocean Day.. ’s also Monday. We may not have been around for 100 years (yet), but for the past nearly 10 years we’ve been living at sea fighting against plastic pollution and for the protection of our oceans. We agree with Sir David Attenborough that the most important place is at sea. While today is a moment to celebrate and appreciate the ocean, protecting it requires more than a single day of awareness. It takes consistent action, collaboration, and people willing to get their hands dirty. Every bag of waste removed, every volunteer engaged, and every conversation started brings us one step closer to hea
  96. - This was in Herøy, Norway - and I am still a bit baffled by what a…. ! And I am not great at maths, but the impact of this work certainly adds up. When you’re in the middle of it, it’s easy to sometimes get lost in the feeling that the pollution is never ending: There is always another island full of trash, another polluted beach, another pile of ropes and plastic. So every now and then it’s good to step back and be like: “Wow, this is actually sick - all of this plastic litter is out of nature now and won’t be suffocating any birds or whales any time soon!”, #plasticpollution #norway #ocean #nopl
  97. - Meet our workboat Dory!. ! She is operating in Finnmark, Norway- collecting plastic pollution in one of the most remote and inaccessible areas in the world. Dory joined us in 2020 and since then she has allowed us to remove around 250 tonnes of plastic pollution and clean 1000 km of coastline. All powered by 4,000 engines hours and over 100 volunteers. Dory has been with us through every high and low of our operations, from long days of picking litter and challenging weather to unforgettable wildlife encounters and breathtaking views. Here’s to many more tonnes and many more kilometers. Thank you, Dory! 💙 #inthesameboat #workboat #prote
  98. - Come sailing with our Live Team ⛵️✨ Yes we are beach cleaners, but…. ! We live and operate on sailboats, sailing along the Norwegian coastline and accessing really remote areas that are also heavily polluted. At In The Same Boat, we host and train volunteers from all over the world to be beach cleaners and sailors ⛵️💙 There is something incredibly special about living among the nature we are fighting to protect. We get to experience and learn from the powers of the ocean, wind, and land reminding us that we are all interconnected and part of the environment 🌏 If you are sailor, what’s your favorite part of sailing?
  99. - We are not just beach cleaners.. “In The Same Boat” means pulling stuck nets out of the ground, rowing against the wind, collecting plastic in the rain, and climbing over cliffs. It means sailing beneath the midnight sun, sharing cake on deck after a long day, exploring new landscapes, and growing together like a family. Being In The Same Boat is about so much more than cleaning coastlines, it’s about the people beside you and the memories and the impact you create together. If you’d like to learn more about what our work visit www.inthesameboat.eco 💙 #inthesameboat #plasticpollution #community #preservenature #sailing
  100. - Be the Bellingham to my Haaland and let’s take care of our planet…. 🫶 This is my 7th year of beach cleaning in Norway - as a surfer, I just hated seeing all this horrible plastic litter in the ocean and really wanted to do something about it! So now, together with volunteers from around the world, we remove marine litter from the second longest coastline in the world. And my favourite part (I mean, there are loads of favourite parts ofc 🤪), is just watching complete strangers come together and become a team. People from different countries, backgrounds and beliefs, all choosing to spend their time taking care of something we
