First There Was the Ocean
"Before the filmmaking, before the investigations, before all the fighting, there was the ocean. I moved to the coast to surf." Four months working a surf camp in Andalucía, daily walks on the same beach, a lighthouse she kept photographing, and captions that read more like poetry than posts. Everything after this grows out of it.

- - I took this picture after a very heavy storm.. 't that powerful anymore and waves were no longer crashing on rocks at the beach, white water splashing high up in the air, but gently - as if nothing had happened - rolling over the sand. And I just remember thinking to myself, if the ocean can calm itself I can too. We are both salt water mixed with air. // is this how writing captions works?:D just trying to give some background info to the photo

- - Isn't it funny how we always ache for some light to guide us home?. // _ _ lil (historical) background: The Cape Trafalgar got its name due to the Battle of Trafalgar which took place here in 1805. During the battle, the British fleet under Admiral Nelson destroyed the united Spanish-French fleet and Nelson died. Now the Trafalgar Square with the column of Lord Nelson in London is supposed to reminds us of this event. // _ _ The lighthouse itself does not have an actual purpose nowadays. No ship needs it to show them the way. So it was tu

- - MOB exercise (Man Over Board) was on todays program at the ITSB School!. ! First some theory and then some practice at sea with our skipper as marker. This exercise was an eye opener where we for real realized the importance of training, knowledge and exerience to be safe at sea. After the exercise we had a brief where we talked about all the details and how we can improve the next time - and then one of us is going to be the marker! - - WEEK / 2020 REPORT The first week of preparation and doing the ITSB…. WEEK #1 / 2020 REPORT The first week of preparation and doing the ITSB Beach Cleaning School, is now over. Despite the fact that we couldn’t start full scale beach cleaning due to the weather, we didn’t waste our time in the harbor. We took that opportunity to prepare ourselves, in order to be as operational as possible. First we worked a lot on safety. We learnt how to use a radio. How, when and who to call for help. We practiced the life jacket checks and how to put it on... We had a mock rescue mission, we had to “rescue” Trond who “fell overboard” three times, we’re thinking about teaching him about balance now. We also have pr

- - FACING THE TRASH We have now started to face the Norwegian plastic…. “for real”. The first words that come to our minds, to describe this experience are shock, frustration - and motivation! First, we were shocked. Of course, we had seen the videos, we had been told how much plastic was here and how much it needed cleaning. We didn’t come here to clean up spotless beaches. But on the videos, you think only the worst parts are shown, you don’t imagine that the density of plastic waste is actually that high on the whole place. You don’t hear the plastic bottles crushing under your feet, hidden by the herbs. You don’t realize ho

WEEK #2 / 2020 REPORT During this week, we got in to the reality of this work, we had to fight against the weather, and eventually got used to the life on a boat. First we faced the reality of the plastic pollution for the first time. We also experienced full days, half days, rest days, and different combinations of them, so we started to understand better what each of these represent, in terms of tiredness and recovery. We got used to day-to-day routines, like mooring techniques, pick-up strategies, loading/unloading Nemo. Our technique has improved during the week, and we became more and more efficient. The weather wasn’t with us.

- - CREW-MEMBER PRESENTATION.. 'm Julia, a 19 year old passionate snowboarder from Germany. First and foremost, I joined ITSB to do important and valuable work for the nature and to preserve it for future generations. It all started a few years ago when I became a vegetarian. In this process I also engaged in issues like sustainability and environmental protection. I began eating vegan meals as often as possible. Since then I have also tried to buy mostly plastic-free and generally only things I really need. When I visited Norway last summer, I expected to see a clean country - so I was really surprised and shocked about all the trash I

- - CREW-MEMBER PRESENTATION.. 19 years old, from Germany - surfer and ocean lover. Since I can remember I have always picked up litter from beaches, of course increased a lot during the last years. Now I am bringing my actions to the next level, to really make an impact on our coastal environment, by being a part of In The Same Boat. As a surfer, I am naturally really passionate about keeping our oceans clean, and I`m super motivated to actually make a change in the way many people and companies are treating our oceans. After my graduation, I now take some time for myself to travel, follow my interests and make new experienc

- - WEEK 4 / REPORT 2020 Good news everyone!. ! Do you remember the goal we had set last week? We wanted to collect one ton of waste a day. Well, we made it! Every full workday, we came back with a ton of plastic! That's because we have two new volunteers, so we can pick up more than on Lånan. The islands of the municipality of Rødøy are a bit harder to work on than the ones in Lånan. Maybe we get less dirty, because there is a lot more grass, instead of big mud fields, but the trash is more spread out. In Lånan, we didn’t have to walk a lot to go from one trash hotspot to the others. The locals help us by giving us tips, and also manpo

- - CREW PRESENTATION Hi everyone!. ! I am Juliette, a 27-year old Parisian. Back in France, I was a software engineer. When I wasn’t training for rugby - my biggest passion, I was hosting couchsurfers. I was looking for an adventure and physical work, and the ITSB mission was exactly what I was looking for. First, life on a boat itself is for me a childhood dream come true. I have spent so much time reading books like The Treasure Island, Robinson Crusoe, Kensuke’s Kingdom... Secondly, I loved the idea of being in tough conditions, with a few people, working together towards a goal. I am expecting it to bring all the people in the boat cl
