The Suicide Club began in 1977 in San Francisco's Sunset neighborhood. Members climbed the Golden Gate Bridge, rode cable cars naked, and "liberated" billboards from their commercial messages. Around 1986, the SF Cacophony Society began new pranks such as SantaCon, Urban Iditarod, and the initial "Zone Trip" to Black Rock to burn an effigy of a man. John and Carrie also explain how the free Communiversity of the early 1970s was the transition from the hippie era to their later punk pranks.
