- - Paris–Rouen - First Automobile Race. July 22, 1894. Le Petit Journal organises the Paris–Rouen "Concours", 126 km, 21 starters. Counts as the world's first competitive automobile event. Peugeot and Panhard share the top prize.
- - Gordon Bennett Cup. 1900-1905. James Gordon Bennett Jr's international racing trophy, six annual editions across European countries. Birthed the national-team race format that eventually became Grand Prix racing.
- - First Grand Prix (Le Mans). June 26-27, 1906. The first race called "Grand Prix" runs at Le Mans organised by the Automobile Club de France. Renault wins. The format eventually replaces the Gordon Bennett Cup and becomes F1's ancestor.
- - First Indianapolis 500. May 30, 1911. Ray Harroun wins the inaugural Indy 500 in a Marmon Wasp at 74.6 mph. The single most American racing institution. Continuous Memorial Day weekend event ever since (with WW interruptions).

- - Nürburgring Opens (Nordschleife). June 18, 1927. Nürburgring Nordschleife (20.8 km, 73 turns) opens. "Green Hell" (Jackie Stewart 1968). Production-car lap time becomes the global supercar pissing-contest. Closes to F1 in 1976 after Lauda crash.

- - Juan Manuel Fangio - 5x F1 Champion. 1951, 1954-1957. Fangio wins 5 F1 titles for four different teams (Alfa, Mercedes, Ferrari, Maserati). Record held 46 years until Schumacher 2003. Considered the best driver until Senna.
- - Niki Lauda - Title Despite Burns. 1977. Niki Lauda wins second F1 World Championship for Ferrari, one year after near-fatal Nürburgring crash. Bandaged head + flame-resistant cap permanently associated with his image. Third title 1984 for McLaren.
