Pony - Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, Chincoteague, Virginia. According to legend, Chincoteague ponies are descended from horses from the shipwreck of a Spanish galleon. Whatever the truth is, horses have been on this island for hundreds of years. The Assateague herd is split between a National Park Service side and a Chincoteague side owned by the volunteer fire company.
