Berlin techno did not begin with the Wall. UFO opened in 1988 in West Berlin, before the Wall fell, and Frankfurt's Technoclub dates to 1984. What the Wall's fall supplied was space: ownerless buildings, unclear property titles and a vacuum of licensing authority in the former East.
