Health officers examining passengers aboard the liner Shimyo Maru

Public Health Service officers inspect passengers on the deck of the Shinyo Maru off Angel Island, where arrivals to San Francisco Bay were screened before landing. Shipboard medical examination was the first stage of the immigration process, ahead of detention at the island station. The photograph belongs to the Public Health Service historical file at the National Archives.
