An engraving from Samuel C. Upham's memoir of his 1849 voyage to California by way of Cape Horn, published in Philadelphia in 1878. The surrounding text recounts prising forty-five dollars in nuggets from a crevice in the rock and keeping quiet about it. The volume was issued for the Associated Pioneers of the Territorial Days of California and digitised from a Library of Congress copy.
