Ships rotting at anchor in Yerba Buena Cove

One plate from William Shew's five-part daguerreotype panorama of the San Francisco waterfront, taken from Rincon Point. The vessels were abandoned where they moored when their crews walked off for the gold fields, and are shown in varying stages of decay. Shew's panorama is one of the earliest photographic records of the harbour.
