Bandits ambush a traveller in the gold country

George du Maurier drew this scene for the story "Of a Man Who Fell Among Thieves" in the London weekly Once a Week, published 19 October 1861. It depicts an attack by bandits during the California Gold Rush, a staple of the lawlessness British readers associated with the gold fields. The engraving was cut by Joseph Swain's workshop.
