Movietone cameras on the Embarcadero as the general strike opens
JUL 16 1934
British Movietone newsreel filmed on 16 July 1934, the first day of the San Francisco general strike, when roughly 130,000 workers stopped work across the city. The camera holds on massed strikers, mounted police and tear-gas canisters bursting in the street. The West Coast waterfront strike had by then run since 9 May over the longshoremen's demand for a union-controlled hiring hall.
