Holmes cylinders at the outer end of Pier 34 under construction
1921
The seaward end of Pier 34 during building work, showing the Holmes cylinders used to carry the structure into the bay. The photograph was made for the San Francisco Bay Marine Piling Committee, which surveyed how marine borers and salt water were destroying the port's timber piling. Its findings pushed the waterfront toward concrete construction.
