The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize??

The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize?? (2002) Director: Mark Pellington Era: Post-Millennial Neo-Psychedelia (2002) - Peak alternative rock crossover; psychedelic surrealism enters mainstream MTV rotation via Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots era Tier-1 artifact of early-2000s alternative rock and neo-psychedelia. Directed by one of MTV's most acclaimed video directors at the peak of his commercial visibility, the video pairs Pellington's kinetic visual language with The Flaming Lips' accessible psychedelia to produce a work of lasting cultural and aesthetic resonance. Its documentation of Fremont Street as surrealist stage, combined with emotionally direct close-up portraiture, makes it essential viewing for scholars of music video history, American vernacular surrealism, and the alt-rock mainstream crossover of 2001–2005. Context: Released in 2002 as the lead US single from Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, 'Do You Realize??' arrived at a moment when The Flaming Lips were transitioning from cult act to mainstream alternative crossover. The Pellington-directed US video transplanted the song's existential themes, mortality, love, cosmic wonder, into the hyper-real environment of Fremont Street, Las Vegas, fusing psychedelic surrealism with American vernacular spectacle. The video's warm neon palette and emotionally raw close-ups of real people mirrored the song's populist philosophical appeal. It received heavy rotation on MTV and featured in a Hewlett-Packard commercial campaign, accelerating the band's mainstream exposure. The song was later ranked No. 31 on Rolling Stone's 100 Best Songs of the 2000s and became the official rock song of Oklahoma from 2009–2013. Director notes: This is the US version of the 'Do You Realize??' video, directed by Mark Pellington. It was filmed on Fremont Street in Las Vegas and features Wayne Coyne walking the strip in a white suit with a white guitar, accompanied by four female dancers in negligee, costumed characters dressed as pigs and bunnies, and a live elephant. The video opens with Coyne at a bus stop beside a man in a pig suit, before being transported by an unseen force to Fremont Street. Close-up shots of people in various emotional states are interspersed throughout. The elephant falls when Coyne sings about death and rises when he sings about love. The video closes with Coyne returned to the bus stop. A separate UK version of the video exists, directed by Wayne Coyne and Bradley Beesley, with entirely different content. The US version was released March 16, 2002. The clip was later edited into the compilation VOID (Video Overview in Deceleration) (2005).
