Public Opinion, chapter one

A reading of the opening chapter of Walter Lippmann's Public Opinion, 'The World Outside and the Pictures in Our Heads', published in 1922. Lippmann's argument is that everyone acts on a compressed mental picture assembled from limited reports, and that whoever controls those reports shapes the behaviour that follows. It is the founding text for the professional management of opinion, and the source of the phrase manufacture of consent.
