Detecting propaganda in Chinese newspapers
FEB 28 2015
Molly Roberts presents research on identifying propaganda in the Chinese press, using text analysis across many newspapers to separate directed messaging from ordinary reporting. The talk is a good corrective to the assumption that state influence looks like crude praise: it often shows up as distraction, in what is covered and when, rather than in what is asserted. Academic methods seminar.
